Designing small clothes for our dolls...

Dolls are sooooo patient!
They will keep still for ages and won't moan if you want them to try something on... yet again. Our dolls are very small so their clothes don't take long to knit, but small sizes can create other problems. Here are a couple of them...
Precise instructions
When you are designing items that are so small, it is very difficult to give exact measurements, as one stitch, either across or down, may be such a large percentage of the item. I give measurements in both centimeters and inches for 2 reasons. I must admit, firstly, so that the patterns can be used in the US, handy as Barbie is American; but also so that you can use both systems to estimate a measurement. And, of course, always ensure that the item will fit your doll.
Adding yarn
Every time you knit an item, or want to change colour, you will have 2 lengths of 'trailing' yarn to contend with. I have learnt, through experience, to leave these lengths of trailing yarn in places where they will be most useful, such as for sewing up seams. When adding in a different colour, always ensure that the yarn is joined in the least inconvenient place for sewing in. It is often best to avoid joining yarn at the hem of an item, or around the neckline where sewing in might cause distortion.
These are just a couple of dilemmas that are encountered when designing clothes for small dolls.
