How I go about designing...

Someone asked a while ago how do I go about designing things... It's all very simple really... my designs are all quick and easy to make, so if something starts to get too complicated, then I have to stop and rethink it. Usually I ponder on what would happen if I left a complicated bit out altogether... Would the item still look like it should do? Will it still give the impression of being like it should be?
I spend more time undoing yarn than actually knitting it up. It is so easy to get carried away with the designing bit that I have to backtrack to remember exactly what I did do in the end. And with such small items, adding or removing just one row can have major consequences.
I also try to reduce the amount of times that yarn has to be added to an item. This saves having to sew it in, and then again on finishing with it. So I plan where to leave the trailing yarn so that it is left in place ready for some particular action, like sewing up seams. I might also secure the yarn but feed it through on the inside of the item to leave it in place for some other later action.
The shoes are ready now, just need a few more photos... Perhaps I'll display some of my design 'mistakes' in another post... (or perhaps not...)
